5 Tips to Improve Your IELTS Speaking Score Quickly

The IELTS speaking test makes many students nervous — but with the right preparation, you can improve your band score significantly in weeks. Our Kuala Lumpur IELTS teachers share their top five tips.

1. Record yourself daily

Spend 10 minutes each day answering Part 1 and Part 2 questions aloud. Record on your phone, listen back, and note filler words (“um”, “like”, “you know”).

2. Expand your answers

Never give one-word answers. Use the ARE method: Answer the question, give a Reason, and share an Example from your experience.

3. Learn topic vocabulary in clusters

IELTS topics repeat: environment, education, technology, health. Build vocabulary lists for each theme rather than random word lists.

4. Practise with a partner

Speaking alone is not enough. Join a class or find a study partner for timed Part 2 cue cards and Part 3 follow-up questions.

5. Take mock tests under exam conditions

What to do this week

If you are comparing schools in Kuala Lumpur, do three things before you pay a deposit. Visit the campus if you are already in Malaysia — Megan Avenue 2 is public and easy to reach from Ampang Park LRT. Sit in a class if the school allows it. Ask who will teach your first two weeks, not only who appears in the brochure. Speak Bright keeps classes at a maximum of 12 so the teacher can hear you. International students should also ask about EMGS timing. A course longer than one month usually needs a student pass. Bring your passport copy, a recent photo, and an honest placement test. Overstating your level wastes the first fortnight. Understating it bores you. The test is free. Use it.
