Studying English in KL: Visa, Accommodation & Cost Guide

Kuala Lumpur is one of Southeast Asia’s most popular cities for international students learning English. Before you pack your bags, here is what you need to know about visas, accommodation, and costs.
Student visa requirements
International students enrolling in courses longer than one month may need a Student Pass issued by Malaysian immigration. Your language school should guide you through the application — at Speak Bright, our team assists with documentation and enrolment letters.
Accommodation options

Cost of English courses in Malaysia
Course fees are significantly lower than Australia or the UK. Indicative rates at Speak Bright:

Living expenses
Expect RM 2,000–3,500 per month for food, transport, and leisure. KL’s public transport (LRT/MRT) is affordable and the city is very walkable in central areas.

Budget the whole month, not only tuition
Tuition from RM 800 per General English level is only the classroom. Add RM 900–2,600 for a room (see 2026 housing tiers), RM 600–900 for food if you cook, LRT reloads, and a buffer for medical screening if you are on a student pass. KL is cheaper than Sydney or London. It is not free. Book housing two weeks before landing. Ampang Park is the station we tell every new student first.
What to do this week
If you are comparing schools in Kuala Lumpur, do three things before you pay a deposit. Visit the campus if you are already in Malaysia — Megan Avenue 2 is public and easy to reach from Ampang Park LRT. Sit in a class if the school allows it. Ask who will teach your first two weeks, not only who appears in the brochure. Speak Bright keeps classes at a maximum of 12 so the teacher can hear you. That is the difference between a language centre and a lecture hall.
International students should also ask about EMGS timing. A course longer than one month usually needs a student pass. Monday intakes exist for a reason: if you miss one week you do not wait a month. General English and Online English still open every Monday. Exam classes (IELTS, PTE) follow the 2026 published starts on the Intake page. Private classes can begin within three working days. Bring your passport copy, a recent photo, and an honest placement test. Overstating your level wastes the first fortnight. Understating it bores you. The test is free. Use it.

WhatsApp and WeChat are staffed in those languages plus English and Arabic.
